If you’re looking for a community that offers a cool climate and is surrounded by nature, Newbury Park with a population of approximately 37,775 is the place to be. In the western portion of Thousand Oaks, approximately 928 of the 63,000 acres comprising the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is located within Newbury Park. As such, it offers miles of trail and a natural environment which surrounds the neighborhoods. It borders Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area to the south, the Los Robles Open Space area to the east and the Arroyo Conejo Open Space Area to the north.
Newbury Park was one of the early developments in the Conejo Valley. The community contains two major new residential areas, Rancho Conejo Village and Dos Vientos Ranch. The first planned community in Newbury Park was Casa Conejo, located in a roughly square-shaped unincorporated area. Many Newbury Park residents did not want to be part of Thousand Oaks as they annexed areas, and many residents fought to stop the incorporation in fear of losing the Newbury Park identity which they are extremely proud of. Casa Conejo and Ventu Park areas remain unincorporated to this day.
The history of the area and the story of the founder of Newbury Park, Egbert Starr Newbury is told well on a visit to the Stagecoach Inn Museum off Ventu Park road, a 19th-century hotel replica.
Hiking paths among lush rolling hills and a cultural center are highlights of picturesque Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa park. The closest coastal city is Malibu (22 mi), which may be reached through winding roads or hiking trails crossing the Santa Monica Mountains from Newbury Park.
Newbury Park has had an increasing population due to the presence of biotechnology firms and technology corporations, such as Amgen and Capsida in the industrial section of the community and has been dubbed “the next Silicon Valley.”
